About the Art...

"Within Reach" is a poignant artwork that encapsulates the spirit of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. On June 19, 1865, the day when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and proclaimed the emancipation of over 250,000 enslaved black individuals by executive decree, marks a significant moment in history. This artwork pays homage to the essence of that day.

At the center of the piece, an African American hand extends towards the heavens, symbolizing the pursuit of freedom and aspiration. Within the reach of this outstretched hand, a cluster of butterflies hovers, each butterfly embodying profound symbolism. The butterfly, as a symbol, represents transformation, hope, faith, and rebirth, reflecting the remarkable journey of the African American community towards freedom
